O'ahu is home to Waikiki, a huge metropolitan, with diverse dining opportunities. There are endless places to find a delicious meal. You can splurge and find a fine dining experience, or save at a small hole-in-the-wall restaurant or food truck.
I try and eat local food as much as possible when travelling. However, while in O'ahu on our last visit we stayed in Waikiki and ate at two chain restaurants. I'm going to list them first, however, I recommend that you eat local cuisine as much as possible. The best dining opportunities are often at small places, locally owned.
Shabuya is located in the Ala Moana Center: Shabuya is a hot pot dining experience. Cook your veggies and meats at your table in a personalized hot pot. It's affordable, and a great way to eat healthy. All you can eat for $29.99 per person.
Tanaka Ramen & Izakaya Ala Moana Center: We also ate here, as it was located conveniently close to our hotel. Fresh, affordable Japanese Ramen. Extremely affordable, it is easy to eat a meal for around $16.00 per meal.
3. Waiahole Poi Factory: The Waiahole Poi Factory has a history of more than 100 years. Traditionally as a poi factory, and now as an essential road side restaurant. Every meal sold is a traditional Hawaiian dish. I go out of my way to eat at this establishment it is a must try.
4. The Pig and the Lady: Located Downtown, you must eat here. It is always top of the list in all reviews of restaurants on the island. A definite must try Vietnamese cuisine. It is also decorated in a very cute manner. It is a little higher priced than what I expect, but worth it for the experience. Do arrive early, it is hard to find parking in China Town.
5. Mud Hen Water: Located in Palolo not far from Waikiki. This is a fantastic opportunity to support local. They often have events which support other local businesses. They also create traditional, Hawaiian cuisine and have a farm to table menu. The food is delicious and well worth a visit.
Food Trucks
6. Giovanni's Shrimp Truck: There are multiple locations on the island, Kahuku and Haleiwa. The truck has a literal following of people that flock to it everytime they visit the island. My favourite is the shrimp scampi and my husband loves the Lemon Butter Shrimp. Don't forget to your cash, because they do not take electronic payment method.
7. Haleiwa Bowls: Located in Haleiwa. Their specialty is the acai bowl, but you can also get coffee, tea or smoothies. It's a great way to get fresh fruit.
8. North Shore Tacos: Located in Pupukea. Perfect for lunch after a morning snorkel at Sharks Cove. They have tons of different tacos. Including fresh caught fish.
O'ahu has fantastic food opportunities. These options don't even scratch the surface of what you can find. But it is a great place to be adventurous and try new foods. Including traditional Hawaiian food you likely won't have the opportunity to try anywhere else.
I want to thank my followers for your patience while I did not post during exam season. Happy New Year and remember.
